چکیده

The stability of ideal MHD ballooning modes in the presence of sheared flow is investigated for three-dimensional equilibria. Application of ballooning formalism reduces the problem to a partial differential equation in three dimensions that can be solved in the limit of small flow. Analytic calculations demonstrate the stabilizing effect of shear flow. The derived stability criterion generalizes prior work related to axisymmetric equilibrium with sheared toroidal flow. Non-ideal MHD ballooning modes in three-dimensional configurations

A linear stability theory of non-ideal MHD ballooning modes is investigated using a two fluid model for arbitrary three-dimensional electron-ion plasmas. Resistive-inertia ballooning mode (RIBM) eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are calculated for a variety of equilibria including axisymmetric shifted circular geometry (s − α model) and configurations of interest to the Helically Symmetric Stellar...

Role of flow shear in the ballooning stability of tokamak transport barriers.

A tokamak's confinement time is greatly increased by a transport barrier (TB), a region having a high pressure gradient and usually also a strongly sheared plasma flow. The pressure gradient in a TB can be limited by ideal magnetohydrodynamic instabilities with a high toroidal mode number n ("ballooning modes"). Previous studies in the limit n--> infinity showed that arbitrarily small (but nonz...

Three Dimensional Stability Analysis of a Liquid Propellant Combustor

A theoretical study analyzing three-dimensional combustion acoustic instabilities in a liquid propellant rocket engine combustor has been conducted. A linear theory based on Crocco’s pressure sensitive time lag model is used. To apply this theory the combustor is divided into two main components, including the combustion chamber and the converging part of the nozzle. The assumption of concentra...

Turbulent transport and flow effects on NTM evolution and trigger mechanisms

Abstract. We study two problems related to the excitation and nonlinear evolution of neoclassical tearing modes in a tokamak, namely, (i) the effect of a background of microturbulence generated by short scale length instabilities such as the Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) mode or the Electron Temperature Gradient (ETG) mode and (ii) the effect of a toroidal sheared flow on the stability of the ...

Nonlinear MHD Simulations of Spherical Tokamak and Helical Plasmas

Nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations on relaxation phenomena in a spherical tokamak and a helical plasma, including three-dimensional (3D) equilibrium computations, are executed in full toroidal geometries. For a spherical tokamak, two-step evolution of the medium-n ballooning instabilities and a successive excitation of an internal n=1 crash has been observed. A similar process has ...
